Outside of the stadium there is a weekly pet market where people sell (or give away) cats, dogs and other various animals while pet supply vendors set up their wares among soccer jersey kiosks. After fighting the urge to pet every cute puppy and eat at every food stand, we go into the stadium and pick our seats on the hot concrete bleachers. Watching people can be just as entertaining as watching the game. Vendors walk through the crowds selling homemade ice cream and empanadas while marching bands on either side of the stadium try to outdo each other by blasting upbeat versions of rock ballads (they really like “I’ll Stand by You” by The Pretenders). Throw in a good futbol game and it makes for a great weekend outing.
One of our favourite weekend activities takes place only two blocks from our apartment at Estadio Félix Capriles—the soccer stadium. Futbol (soccer) is one of the favourite pastimes here in South America, so we've been taking in as much of it as we can by going to games regularly. Every couple of weeks our Cochabamba team, Wilsterman, plays at the stadium at a cost of four dollars a person (kids are free). However, the soccer game itself is only part of the experience.
