We've become regulars of several vendors and look forward to catching up with them every week. The potato section is one of our favourites (a vegetable that originated in Bolivia and which the country boasts in having over 300 varieties). We can simply tell our potato vendor what we’re planning on making and she’ll direct us to the best potato for the job! For a potato lover like Kallie it’s thrilling :)
One aspect of life in Bolivia that we have grown to love is the market culture. Every Saturday we walk a couple of blocks to the weekly market where the street is closed to cars and crowded with vendors. This market is only held on Saturday morning which leaves a narrow window for shopping and also creates a steadfast routine. The produce is fresh, local, and seasonal which means you sometimes need to be creative with a recipe if certain ingredients can't be found. This requires somewhat adjusting your diet to what’s available but also creates anticipation and a new appreciation for the diverse foods we're blessed with. However, the market isn't just a place to buy your fruits and veggies, it's a one stop shop for baking needs, pasta, cheese, and meat. The more you explore, the more you find.
