Coming from a Canadian culture where women are generally respected and seen as equals, the South American “machismo” mentality can be a bit of a shock. In a recent study done by the Pan America Health Organization, over 52% of women in Bolivia aged 15-49 have admitted to being victims of physical or sexual abuse—the highest by far of the 12 Latin American countries involved in the study. Despite this, the women here constantly demonstrate that they are strong, determined, and resourceful overcomers.
This month I had the opportunity to participate in the national Bolivian women’s (Feminil) convention in Santa Cruz. It was amazing to have the chance to meet ladies from all walks of life and hear their stories. Women representing each of the different departments (similar to provinces) in Bolivia gathered together to encourage one another and plan for the coming year. As the first session began, each group paraded in sporting their traditional clothing and brandishing their regional flags—I could tell I was in for an interesting week!
Traditionally, the “Feminil” has been very committed to social work within their communities. They are the ones entrusted with the benevolent funds of their churches and many social programs have been created out of their concern and love for those around them. One of the most notable projects initiated by local feminil groups is our very own Casa de la Amistad (kids prison ministry).
In the coming months we will be visiting different departments to connect further with women's groups and support them in their initiatives. I’m incredibly excited about all of the opportunities and possibilities ahead of us.
